Hooray.  That's what I disliked about this rally... It was a four-wheeler golf cart rally, not a bike one.  My friend's bike overheated due to all of the cart congestion.  About time.  I might start coming back.

Peek hours means more drunk people on bikes than golf carts!!!!

Bikes are going to run hot with or without golf carts. Hey guys there are a lot more camera worthy action on golf carts, if you know what i mean. After riding hard all day a cart is pretty nice and safer especially when your rolling with Jack D.

Looks like the old parade route will be dying down after those who are smart park the bike after a few rounds of drinks. I don't see this rule lasting long but if it does we're all adults and will learn to work around it. Where there's a will there's always a way.

Also, all you people complaining about how dangerous the carts and 4 wheelers are need to think about all these additional bike also means additional drunks on bikes as the night goes on. Not to mention since there are no carts to help slow the action down the speed will also go up. I'm just saying be careful folks. It was bad enough when the traffic was slowed down on the parade route.

The golf carts will hold several people which helps with congestion I would think basesd on the amount of people. I have a bike but enjoy the fun in the evening on the golf cart, I also have friends that join us that dont have a bike which gives them a chance to join and experience the rally. I also like to take my chair around with the striper pole on front, but only do at night when it cools down.  I believe the party and show that makes the parade route fun is mostly from the golf carts. It seams the only way to really get congestion down is less people, is that the direction we want to go.

Well... I will have to say that the more people is why I like to go to ROT.  So I say that is not a good direction with less people.  We have went to several rallies last year and the small ones arent near as much fun.  I really hope they change their minds on the carts but guess we will give it a whirl but I dont think the parade route is going to be as fun.  Just saying.

I have been going to rot for 11 years, staying on rally grounds.  There has been a problem with conjestion way back when the parade was in all tent camping by the pond . Same problem when it move up to the blue section. Just think there was no carts there then ! The carts are not the problem. The people that camp and stand along the parade route to hand out beads, take pics and have a good time stopping traffic (just like it was before the carts) to get a better view that causes the congestion. I have been in the purple section for the last 5 or 6 years - I have friends that stay in the blue, lime, tan, etc. and I use my cart to visit and carry ice chests etc. Due to the tight space available I have to keep my truck in a different parking lot and my cart lets me get things to and from my camper without having to bring a 1 ton up among the crowd. I have always supported ROT changes in the past but this has gone to far especially for the amount that it costs to attend this rally. I want to see you (the ROT staff) doing your job on your motorcycle - no carts for us then no carts for yall. If its gonna be a motorcycle rally then lets make it a real motorcyle rally - all the way down from police to staff to participants. ROT has its problems but A GOLF CART IS THE LEAST OF THEM!

I agree with bj7730.  It's a rally!!  Could the cause of this congestion be caused from people trying to get to and from the band stage in the evenings?  The only way to get there is to follow the route through the blue lot.  This is where the bikes park in the median and the road narrows.  Could the stage area be moved to the gate 2 area?  It would be easier for those who park in the car lot for the evening to walk to that area. And those who ride carts to the concerts could have more parking over there. Plus, yellow and red lots would get to see some action.  Let's just have fun once a year!!!

I'm handicap..lost my leg in a bike wreck. I still ride but not after I been drinking and not in a crowds of drunk people on vehicles of any type. When I'm there I ride my bike during the day around the back roads of the countryside away from the crowds. We come back to the camp ground park, eat, start drinking and go out on the 4 wheeler/golf cart and enjoy participating in the rally that I paid the same money to attend..like everyone else. And like a comment before me I have been here without the carts and it was still congested then. As long as there is a reason for the riders..bike or cart to stop and enjoy themself for a minute or two you're going to have conjestion. And when they stop enjoying thereself they will stop coming. If you stop the carts those people will be walking around the parade route to find spots to enjoy...same congestion. If not walking now you have hundreds of more impaired riders...same congestion plus more potential for injury. A possible solution and compromise is to make one lane a through/emergency lane where there is no stopping for spectating.

  Please save the carts

Like many others that have posted we have been going to ROT for 10 years now and settled down in the green section right on the parade route. I really do get it that this is a bike rally, thats the main reason that I attend. I ride the beautiful hill country during the day and come back to the rally grounds for the party at night. Between the drinking and golf carts being banned there will surely be more congestion because of the accidents from people riding their bikes that aren't sober enough to do so and that will have traffic backed up waiting for the EMT's to arrive. We travel to several rallies throughout the year and I have seen what happens when alcohol and two wheels come together and it never turns out good. I can't see this as any kind of a positive move and hope the powers in charge don't put it in place.

As I've read on here already, I think the real issue was with the few ( but growing) number of idiots that do not understand that BIKES should and do have the right away. Although some are just that ( idiots) believe it or not there are some who do not even know this. I wish the powers that be had issued some warnings to ALL who attend that this is how it is then maybe this new rule wouldn't have had to be used. Just my thoughts, the masses are punished for what the idiots do.

Sorry to hear of the new rule at ROT 2012. Anyone with common sense knows alcohol and bikes do not mix. We have attended for many years and just know and expect the parade route to be congested. Why encourage or force bikers to get on their bikes when they have been drinking all day? Not a smart decision. The probability of an innocent bystander getting hurt or killed will skyrocket. Without the congestion, speed will also be a major factor. NOT A SMART DECISION!

Mike1fcm, don't forget about the BAR rally, it's great.

I still think they need two different parade routes.... but if the cart and four wheelers can't ride the bike route the same should be said for the bikes on the cart route as well.

Now I'll just ride my bike during the day and find an alternate route to the stage for concerts on my cart.

I have been to ROT for the past four years and enjoyed it every year. I'm not a 4 wheel or cart rider but I do enjoy seeing the different creativity of the vehicles people bring not to mention what's riding on some of them. Yes I'm one of those individuals standing on the side of the prade route drinking and throwing beads at the ladies. But on the other hand I do see why some folks are complaining about them, idiots crashing into $80,000.00 plus RV, I do believe I would be pissed. I was lucky this past year, that our neghbor's generator was a barrier protecting our bikes from a drunk driver crashing into it on a golf cart. So I thank my ROT neighbor for placing his generator where he did.

Actually I think the trailers cause more congestion than any other vehicle but thats also part of the rally. I know some people come without bikes and only have carts. The assholes that think 14k and throwing rocks is great and the bikes cutting through other folks lots are the pita for me. As long as there are good looking women there will be congestion.

OK, the new and final ruling has been made on the carts....I have to say it doesn't bother me the way it is but there are still a couple things that need clarifying..

first is.. what is considered a golf cart and who will determine this? Put a bag rack on the back and call it a cart?

The second ( and hopefully I won't need the answer to this) "You will get a warning for the first violation. The second will result in your cart being impounded by the Sheriff’s dept. You will be required to pay an impound fee."  Just how much is this fee? To be determined at the time or what?

Think you are making a mistake cause the most fun is the parade and the crazy stuff that goes with it. Think something else could have been done to ensure safety..like tell the bike clubs  to quit hiding out in "their areas " and throwing bottles full of water and what ever else at people as they go by but what do I know. May be out last Rot rally but going to give it a chance. And if a dud always have the BAR in Alvarado.

I foresee a longer wait at registration while ROT staff spends time at the registration parking lot area verifying if someone has a cart or a UTV.  Most likely there will be tempers flaring over what is a hyped up cart as opposed to a UTV.  Is this kind of publicity want ROT needs?  Both have 4 wheels, steering wheel, lights.  ROT should allow UTV's to eliminate alot of unnessasary stress for the attendees and ROT staff.
